It’s easy to see why Rankin has a huge cult following. Drawing on a rich vein of English humour that encompasses Python, Adams and Stanshall, his comedy-fantasies are filled with pop culture references, music hall wordplay and ironic quips galore. Retromancer, sequel to Brightonomicon, finds time-travelling magus Hugo Rune and his acolyte Rizla adrift in WWII Blighty. This is Rankin’s 30th novel and he’s got this shtick down pat – but the constant stream of gags may make you flinch after a while.
