It’s the year 2055, and our worst fears of environmental catastrophe have all come to pass. One man (Pete Postlethwaite) looks back at archive footage from 2007 to find out what we were playing at. He concentrates on six characters, including a British family trying to set up a wind farm and an 80-year-old French Alpine guide, in tears at the retreat of his beloved glaciers. As a conceit this works well, and may affect even those who find the breast-beating a bit much. We are, after all, talking about the end of the world.

This time, scientists with a grudge against the Catholic Church decide to kill the Pope and steal antimatter from the Large Hadron Collider. Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) has to solve clues to stop the antimatter turning Rome into a large ravine. If you’re thinking ‘Why leave clues?’ then you’re watching the wrong film.

Angels and Demons is a fast-paced, undemanding thriller, and better than its predecessor.
